by The Vatican Film Library will celebrate its 40th Saint Louis Conference on Manuscript Studies this coming 11-12 October 2013. This annual two-day conference features a wide array of topics in medieval and Renaissance manuscript studies, addressing subjects such as paleography, codicology, illumination, book production, and more. This year’s program includes sessions on “masterpieces” of medieval illumination, the pedigrees and provenance of manuscripts, scribal intervention in manuscript production, manuscripts in Middle English, and manuscripts by, for, and about women.
Two guest speakers will deliver the Lowrie J. Daly, SJ, Memorial Lecture on Manuscript Studies this year. Thomas Kren, Associate Director of Collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum, will speak on “Extra-Devotional Imagery in the Grandes heures of Anne of Brittany and the Hours of Louis XII” (Friday, 11 October 2013), and Derek Pearsall, emeritus professor of English at the University of York and at Harvard University, will speak on “Medieval Anthologies, Compilations, Miscellanies: The Rage for Order” (Saturday, 12 October 2013). The Lowrie Daly lecture series is co-sponsored with the Saint Louis University Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
Both guest lectures are free and open to the public and will be held at 4pm in Pere Marquette Gallery, DuBourg Hall.
