De-stress December with Marbling at Pius Library

Give gifts with a personal touch this holiday season by using hand-made marbled paper for cards, gift tags, or ornaments!

It’s finals week, and everyone’s working hard. Pius XII Memorial Library is the place to be if you want to meet with your subject librarian, check out books, do research and writing, or review your work with a writing center consultant. It’s also a good place for a breather playing with pups in the second floor gallery, tinkering with a jigsaw puzzle in the lobby, taking a coffee break with friends at Einstein’s, or soaking in some holiday cheer (even Pius XII is in the Christmas spirit!).

Pius Claus?

Special Collections is always here to help you with your research needs, and you’re welcome to unwind by checking out one of our exhibits. This semester, however, Rare Books is offering a bit more in the way of de-stressing December: a marbled paper pop-up station in the lobby of Pius XII Memorial Library! Trough marbling is a technique in which paint is floated atop thickened water, combed or drawn into designs, then adhered to a piece of treated paper. (Read more about the history and technique of marbling paper on the Special Collections Currents blog or from our current exhibit, The Binder’s Art). Here’s a glimpse of the process (and the colorful result):

A glimpse of the process: (1) apply paint to the surface of the thickened water, or size; (2) comb the paint into a pattern; (3) comb it some more; (4) lay your treated paper on the surface …
… And (5) pick up the paper, rinse off the excess size, and voila — your sheet of marbled paper! If it looks like fun, that’s because it is.

If you want to try your hand at this ancient art, look for our table near the circulation desk (across from Einstein’s Bagels) beginning at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome as long as supplies last, so take a ten-minute break from studying to make something lovely and get a head-start on holiday gift making!

We hope to see you there!
