by The Vatican Film Library in the Saint Louis University Libraries Special Collections announces three new research fellows in its Mellon Fellowship Program for spring and early summer of 2013. These short-term fellowships are offered to support research using the Vatican Film Library’s extensive microfilm collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts from the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana and other libraries, as well as Jesuit historical documents from a variety of archives in Italy, Spain, South, Central, and North America. Fellows also benefit from the VFL’s outstanding reference collection in manuscript studies. Scholars study original manuscripts for a variety of purposes — in order to discover new ideas and information from unpublished texts and images or to test received knowledge and develop new hypotheses directly from the sources. In this way, the Vatican Film Library advances fundamental research in the Humanities.

Fellowships are open to both post-doctoral scholars and doctoral candidates formally admitted to a Ph.D. program working on their dissertations. Since 1976 this program has been supported by the generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, allowing scholars from around the world to take advantage of Saint Louis University’s unique research collections.
