2019 St. Louis Literary Award

On Thursday, October 24, the Saint Louis University Library Associates will honor award-winning Haitian-American writer, Edwidge Danticat, author of
acclaimed books such as Breath, Eyes, Memory; Krik?Krak!; and The Dew Breaker, with the annual St. Louis Literary Award. 

Danticat, who has written a variety of fiction and non-fiction chronicling the lives of Haitian citizens, is a graduate of Brown University. Her master’s thesis from Brown was published in 1994 as her debut novel Breath, Eyes, Memory, and in 1998 it was selected as an official book club pick by Oprah Winfrey. In addition to her books, Danticat has been recognized for her 2010 essay collection, Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work. She is also the recipient of an American Book Award (1999), a National Book Critics Circle Award (2007), and a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship (2009). 

The event will be held in the Sheldon Concert Hall, 3648 Washington Boulevard, beginning at 7:00 PM. The event is free and is open to the public, but registration is required to receive a ticket. A special reception with Ms. Danticat will be held following the St. Louis Literary Award ceremony. Tickets to the special reception are $100 per person. 

The following day, Friday, October 25, at noon in the Center for Global Citizenship (West Pine Gym), Danticat will present a “craft talk” about her writing. This event is free and open to the public, and reservations are NOT required.
